Drabble A Day #15
This drabble is going to be part of a series that I'm writing for a challenge by
stmargarets...who issued the "You, Marry Sue" Challenge.
Harry got out of the car and walked to the glass door of the hotel. Once inside the lobby, his eyes went up to the vaulted ceiling with its exposed beams and then up to the balcony of the upper floor. In front of him were four large, dark brown leather chairs that reminded him of Ginny's eyes, making him smile. A gathering of people was near what he assumed was the front desk and he made his way over there, waiting silently for his turn in the queue.
Finally, someone asked, "Can I help you, sir?" The woman's voice held an odd accent that he doubted he'd heard before. Harry smiled at her and stepped up to the granite counter top. "Checking in?"
"Er, yes, I am. Potter. Harry Potter," he told her and watched as her fingers began moving across the keyboard.
"Mommy! That man talks funny!" a little girl shouted from behind him. Harry tried to contain his laughter but was unsuccessful. On a whim, he turned around and bent to the little girl's level.
"I'm sorry, sir. Danielle, remember what I talked to you about?" The mother's 'about' stretched out comically and made Harry's smile broader.
"You know, little one," Harry began, "you're the one who sounds funny to me. Where I come from, everyone sounds like me."
The little girl's eyes widened and she smiled a toothless grin. "Really?"
"Absolutely."
"Excuse me, Mr. Potter?" Harry's attention was drawn back to the hotel employee and he stood up. "If you could fill out this information here...and here...and sign at the bottom." She placed an 'x' at a line at the bottom of the page. "And will you be requiring the 'special' arrangements I wrote to you about?" Her emphasis on the word 'special' caught his attention. She was the witch that Julia told him about.
"Er, yes, please. That would be wonderful. I'm sorry, I forgot your name." He tried to find a name badge on her shirt.
"Oh, that's alright. You'll find everything you need in your room very soon." She snapped her fingers and winked at him, with a little twinkle in her eye. "If you need any assistance at all during your stay, please don't hesitate to ask me. Here are your keycards and passes for the waterpark. To get to your room, take the elevator to the fifth floor and follow the hall straight back."
Harry looked down and saw the number 520, which he assumed was his room. There was also a note written on the key packet.
'Mr Potter---Your room has been cleared by the Minnesota Wizards' Council and magic will be allowed in your room on an unlimited basis. In the rest of the resort, please try to limit your spell work to times when Muggles would be unaware. Thank you for staying at Arrowwood Resort and Conference Center.'
Harry smiled up at her and stepped away, taking his keys and papers along with him. Harry motioned to the bellman to follow him outside to the car.
